There are cycling regions where you first drive half an hour by car before the actual tour begins. Feld am See isn't one of them. Here you roll away from the house, turn onto the first path after a few minutes and are already in the middle of the region. That sounds like a small detail, but it's the real reason a cycling holiday on Lake Brennsee feels so easy.

The question is rarely whether there's a good tour. The question is which tour suits which day. On arrival day, when your legs are still in travel mode, you want something different from the third morning, when you're rested and curious. That's exactly what this article is about: not a list to work through, but a classification by how you feel on the day. We show the range - from the flat lake loop to the long mountain tour - and say which mood each tour is made for. The exact routes with kilometres, elevation and refreshment stops are bundled in a separate guide; more on that at the end.

The flat lake loop for arrival day

The first day isn't a day for climbing. You've travelled, unloaded, perhaps already looked out of the window at the lake - and now you simply want to get moving without setting yourself any goals. That's what the loop around Lake Brennsee is made for.

It's flat, short and runs along the water almost the whole way. You need no special fitness and no sporty bike; an ordinary touring bike or an e-bike is perfectly adequate. Along the way you see how the lake has a different face in different places: here the broad, open view across the water, there a quiet stretch of shore in the shade. If you like, you get off in between, sit by the water and then ride on. It isn't about distance, it's about arriving.

This loop also works as a short evening round after a day on which you hadn't actually planned to get on the bike at all. Or as a joint tour when one of you is back from a longer ride and the other still wants some exercise. It's the most uncomplicated way to begin or end the day on the bike - and a good first impression of how close together everything is here.

If you still feel like more after the lake loop, add a flat extension towards the neighbouring lakes. The area between Lake Brennsee and Lake Afritz is gentle, easy to ride and without big climbs - ideal for stretching out the first afternoon without wearing yourself out.

Three sporty tours into the Nock Mountains

When your legs are awake and your head wants more, the real tours begin. The Nock Mountains are rewarding terrain for cycling: less rugged than the high Alps, with long, drawn-out climbs and the broad, rounded summits that give them their name. You don't ride against the mountain here, you work your way into it. Three directions are particularly worthwhile, and they differ less in difficulty than in character.

The first is the classic half-day tour with a manageable climb - roughly a few hundred metres of elevation, easily done in a morning. It leads out of the valley up to a first height from which you have the lake and the surrounding mountains in view, and back again. That's the tour for the day on which you want to be sporty but not out all day. The afternoon leaves time for the lake.

The second is the long loop with considerably more climbing, more of a day trip. Here you go higher, the climbs drag on, and the reward is the wide view across the Nock Mountains, which up top is different from anything you see from the valley. This tour needs planning: enough to drink, a refreshment stop along the way, and respect for the fact that the descent at the end still needs concentration. For ambitious riders it's the highlight of the week.

The third is the technical variant for everyone looking not just for climbing but for terrain. Here it's narrower paths and trails through the forest, with sections that demand riding technique. That isn't beginner's terrain, but for experienced mountain bikers it's exactly why they come to the Nock Mountains. How far you go and how technical it gets can be controlled well - the region offers everything from rolling forest road to demanding trail and everything in between.

All three tours have one thing in common: they start in the immediate surroundings and need no long approach. You set off, and the mountain comes by itself. Which of the three suits you depends less on ability than on what you feel like on the day - and a little on the weather, more on that later.

Access to the Nock/Bike network and the Flow Country Trail

What makes Feld am See special for cyclists isn't the individual tour but the network behind it. The region is part of an extensive mountain-bike network with several hundred kilometres of signposted routes that stretches across the Nock Mountains to Bad Kleinkirchheim and beyond. If you stay several days, you don't ride the same direction every day but string stages together - west today, the other side of the valley tomorrow, up to a hut the day after. The network is big enough that a week isn't enough to ride it all.

This density is no accident. The region was recently named one of Carinthia's best cycling areas, and out on the trails you notice where that comes from: signposted routes, well-maintained paths, sensible connections between the valleys. You don't have to piece together every detour yourself - the framework is there, and you build your own week on it.

A little further on, in Bad Kleinkirchheim, lies the Flow Country Trail - a long, sweeping descent that counts as one of the longer flow trails of its kind in Europe. Flow here means: no hard jumps, no terrain that throws you off, but a flowing line of berms and rollers you can let run. That's the route for the day when it's about pure riding feel, not climbing. You let yourself be carried instead of working your way up. For many it's the finest contrast to a hard mountain tour: for once only downhill, for once only enjoyment.

The trail isn't right outside the door, but easily reachable within the radius of a cycling day. How best to get there and combine it is exactly the kind of insider knowledge we're glad to pass on to you on site.

E-bikes: rental and charging points in the region

Not everyone who wants to go into the Nock Mountains wants to fight for every metre of climbing - and nobody has to. The e-bike has changed the region, and in the best sense. It makes the long climbs rideable for more people and, incidentally, solves a typical couple's problem: if one is noticeably fitter than the other, with electric assistance they ride at the same pace again. The tour that used to be too hard for one of them becomes a tour for both.

In the region there are rental options for e-bikes and regular bikes, as well as places where the battery can be charged along the way. We deliberately don't name fixed providers, prices or times here - such things change, and an outdated note helps no one. The key message is: you don't have to bring your own bike to get around well here. If you come with an e-bike holiday in mind, just talk to us; we'll tell you what currently works well and where you can get the right bike.

One practical note: with an e-bike the classification of the tours shifts. What's a sporty day tour without a motor becomes a relaxed half-day loop with assistance. So if you're using an e-bike, feel free to aim one level higher than you'd dare without - the climbing feels different.

Places to stop for refreshment along the way

A bike tour in the Nock Mountains lives half on what happens along the way - and that includes the refreshment stop. Up on the heights and along the paths lie alpine pastures and huts where you get off, eat a snack, drink something and let your gaze wander before moving on. That's no side issue but often the moment you remember later: the break at the top, with a view, after the climb.

We deliberately don't give specific opening hours or names with directions here - alpine huts have their own seasons and rest days, and what's true today may be different next year. Rely instead on two things: first, there are places to stop along the usual tours, so you don't have to carry everything yourself. Second, it's worth asking briefly before a longer tour what's open that day. That's exactly what we're here for. A tip at the breakfast table about which hut on your planned route is currently open saves disappointment up on the mountain.

For the days on which you'd rather ride straight through, the opposite applies of course: pack something and take a break wherever you like. The nicest resting place is sometimes not an inn but a meadow with a view.

Save climbing with the summer cable car

There's a little trick that opens up the Nock Mountains even on days when you don't have full strength - or when you'd rather put the effort into the descent than the climb: the cable car. There's a summer cable car in the region that takes you and your bike up to altitude without pedalling. Once at the top, the actual tour begins where others arrive exhausted.

That noticeably changes the possibilities. A tour that would be a long, hard day with your own climb becomes a pleasurable high-level loop with a long descent. For couples it's practical when one loves the climbs and the other prefers to start at the top - you meet at the mountain station and ride the beautiful part together. And for anyone who had a hard tour the day before, the cable car is the elegant way to get up high once more without overtaxing tired legs.

We don't give specific operating times or fares here - it's best to find those out on the day. That the cable car exists and that it carries bikes is the information that matters for planning. We'll gladly sort out the rest when you're here.

What you can reach from our front door without a car

In the end it all comes back to one simple point: how much of all this can you reach without getting in the car? The answer is surprisingly much. The lake loop begins right at the water anyway. The tours into the Nock Mountains start in the immediate surroundings, without a long approach. The trail network connects directly, and the more distant destinations too lie within the radius of a cycling day.

That's more than convenience. It changes how a holiday day unfolds. You get up, have a leisurely breakfast, fetch the bike and set off - no loading up, no traffic jam, no hunting for a parking space at the starting point. And in the evening you roll back to the door, put the bike away and walk straight onto the terrace by the lake. The distance between tour and relaxation is exactly zero. That's precisely the difference between an active holiday that tires you out and one that restores you.

The Strandhotel Burgstaller sits right on Lake Brennsee, with its own kitchen and the lakeside terrace as the arrival point after every tour. With around two dozen rooms and adult guests only, it stays quiet enough that you really switch off in the evening - and decide with a clear head the next morning which tour is on today.

How cycling, hiking, water sports and winter fit together from the house - you'll find it gathered on our overview page Active holidays on Lake Brennsee. And if you'd like to know what a typical day looks like when one of you wants to get on the bike and the other would rather go up the mountain on foot, our article Hiking in the Nock Mountains will help - the logic for couples works just the same for cycling. If you want it concrete right away: our Insider cycling routes & active guide with the exact routes, kilometres, elevation and refreshment tips is available as a PDF download - that's the depth that doesn't fit into a blog article.
