There are cycling regions where you first have to drive for an hour before the cycling begins. Feld am See isn't one of them. The Strandhotel Burgstaller sits right on Lake Brennsee, in the middle of the Nock Mountains, and the first routes start practically outside the door. Whether a flat lakeside loop or a long climb into the mountains - you get on your bike here without needing the car.

This page shows the range: what can be done at an easy pace, what gets sporty, what fills whole days - and how all of it connects to the region's big trail network. We name the level and the direction, but deliberately leave out the kilometre-by-kilometre tour list. We'd rather send you that to match your ability and the season than let it go out of date here.

The region: one of Carinthia's best cycling areas

Around Lake Brennsee and in the Nock Mountains lies one of the densest trail networks in the country - we're talking several hundred kilometres of signposted routes. The region was recently named one of Carinthia's best cycling areas, and you notice it day to day: the routes are well signposted, the connections well thought out, and from Feld am See you'll find a way in in almost every direction.

For you that means choice above all. You don't have to settle on one home loop; you can shape the day according to mood and form - flat when the legs are tired, steep when they're not.

Then there's the terrain itself. The Nock Mountains aren't a rugged high-alpine range but consist of broad, gently rolling alpine ridges. That makes them a mountain-biking area with character: long, steady climbs instead of brutal ramps, wide paths with views up top, and descents that flow rather than fight. Anyone who has ridden these mountains before often comes back for exactly that rhythm.

Tours by level: easy, sporty, summit

The range can be thought of in three levels, and most guests move through all three over the course of a week.

Easy - the flat lake loop. For arrival day or a quiet afternoon, the flat loop along the water is ideal. Little climbing, lots of views, perfect for spinning the legs or as a tour where a couple can stay together without one of them riding at the limit.

Sporty - up into the Nock Mountains. If you're after climbing, you'll find it straight away. The ascents into the Nock Mountains lead upwards over forest roads and trails, with rewarding views and the option of dosing the length yourself - shorter loops or long half-day tours.

Summit - whole days in the mountains. For ambitious days there are tours with serious climbing and summit destinations from which the view stretches far across the lake landscape. These tours demand fitness and time, but reward you with exactly what you come to the mountains for.

The appeal is that you don't have to stay at one level for a whole week. Many guests start on arrival day with the flat loop, then work their way towards the sporty climbs, and save the big tour for a good day with clear weather. The holiday builds itself that way, and by the end you've experienced the region in its full range - instead of overdoing it on day one.

Save climbing with the cable car

Not everyone wants to pedal every metre of climbing themselves - and not every day allows it. The cable car takes part of the ascent off your hands: you ride up with your bike and start higher up, which on the long tours in particular makes the difference between enjoyment and torment. For couples it's practical when fitness levels differ: one rides up, the other takes the lift, and you meet again at the top.

Access to the big trail network and the flow-trail region

The beauty of the location is the connection. What starts from Feld am See feeds into the big trail network of the Nock Mountains, so tours can be extended and combined as you like. You're not limited to one circuit; you can work your way further into the region stage by stage.

In the wider area around Bad Kleinkirchheim there's also a well-known flow-trail region - for everyone who doesn't just want to go up, but above all wants to come back down smoothly. Flow trails are purpose-built descents with rollers and berms, where the downhill itself becomes the goal. If that's the thrill you're after, it's within easy reach from here.

That makes Feld am See a flexible base: one day a classic tour over forest roads and alpine pastures, the next a trip to the flow-trail corner when you feel like pure descending. So you're not stuck in an area that only knows one style; you have touring and purpose-built trail fun within the same range. Which mix suits you depends on your bike and your preferences - both are here.

E-bikes and rental: you don't need to bring a bike

You don't need to carry your own bike on the roof. There's bike rental in the region, including e-bikes - which opens up the mountains for anyone who wouldn't otherwise attempt the long climbs. With electric assistance, a summit tour that used to be out of reach becomes a doable day, and a couple with different fitness levels can suddenly ride the same loop.

Refreshment stops and the right finish at the lake

A good bike tour needs a rest. In the Nock Mountains, alpine huts and places to stop lie along many routes, so a lunch break with a view is rarely far away. We deliberately don't list fixed opening hours here - they change with the season, and we'd rather give you a current tip when you travel.

For many, the best part comes at the end: back at Lake Brennsee, the bike put away, a jump into the lake, and in the evening an à la carte dinner on the lakeside terrace. After a day in the saddle you come when you come - we have no fixed meal times. For active guests that's often the difference: you don't have to rush to be at the buffet on time, but let the tour wind down in peace, shower, sit by the water and eat when hunger comes.

That the tours start at the door and the lake for cooling off is right at the house sounds like small details - but on a cycling holiday they're exactly the things that make a day complete.

Season: when cycling here is at its best

The cycling season in the Nock Mountains runs through the snow-free months, with the focus from early summer into autumn. In spring the lower tours open up before the high summits; in autumn the clear light over the lakes beckons. Exactly when which altitude is rideable depends on the year - we'll gladly tell you what's realistic before you arrive.

Each phase has its own appeal. Early summer brings long, bright days and fresh green on the alpine pastures, but can still be cool at altitude. High summer is the most reliable time for the big summit tours - and on hot days the lake after the descent is all the more welcome. Autumn, finally, is considered by many the finest cycling time of all: stable weather, less traffic on the trails and a long-distance view that is rarely this clear in the summer haze. If you're flexible, choose your dates by what matters most to you when cycling.
